The updated 2018 Mazda CX-5 is now on-sale from $28,690+ORC boasting the inclusion of the brand’s latest 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and more.

MAZDA’S UPDATED 2018 CX-5 is on-sale now with the Japanese car maker saying it has added “new technologies to boost performance and improve efficiency across all engine grades”. The entry price starts at $28,690+ORC, with some variants seeing a price drop of between $400 and $800.

“The Maxx Sport and Touring variants will retail for $400 less than the previous model, while GT and Akera will retail for $800 less,” Mazda said. Despite the price drop, the Akera now gets a 360-degree surround view monitor to match key competitors while the Touring replaces its flip-up head-up display with a windscreen based display.

The old car’s turbo-diesel engine has been replaced by Mazda’s latest-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel which is considerably more powerful, offering 140kW (up from 129kW) and 450Nm of torque (up from 420Nm). The 2.5-litre petrol engine has also been tweaked with cylinder deactivation added to the mix to improve fuel efficiency when driving at constant speeds.

“Unlike other manufacturers employing similar technology, Mazda’s system shuts down cylinders one and four in light-load situations, reducing pumping loss and mechanical resistance. When cruising at 40km/h, real world fuel economy is improved by approximately 20 percent, and by approximately five percent when at a constant 80km/h,” Mazda said in a statement.

Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said, “The CX-5 introduces some major developments with cylinder deactivation and the variable geometry turbocharger, but it’s the smaller technologies that advance Mazda to the ultimate goal of fuel efficiency in combustion engines.

“Mazda truly loves the motorcar, and will continue to refine, innovate and pursue technologies that enhance driving pleasure, while also delivering outstanding environmental and safety performance.”
