Toyota bosses in Europe have admitted the second-generation Toyota 86 will go ahead, and still in partnership with Subaru with the sports car to sit below the Supra.

The Toyota Supra will arrive in Australia later this year and, at the time it was announced, reports began to swirl that the 86 would be shelved in favour of the Supra. But, Toyota bosses in Europe have confirmed to UK automotive magazine, Autocar, that the second-generation 86 will go ahead.

According to a report in Autocar, European marketing boss Matt Harrison said it has been “a successful ‘halo’ product for us”. He added: “Supra is not to replace that car. They are for different audiences and are different products. We see a situation where they will sit alongside each other.”

Designed and built in-conjunction with Subaru, Toyota has said the second-generation 86 will be the same, with Subaru taking the lead on engineering and build. This is the same model Toyota has used with the development of the Supra by joining forces with BMW…the Supra and Z4 share the same platform.
