Mitsubishi to call new SUV, Eclipse Cross
Mitsubishi has announced its new compact SUV, to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, will be called the Eclipse Cross.
MITSUBISHI HAS ANNOUNCED it will call its new compact SUV, Eclipse Cross. It will be revealed in full at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
In a short statement, Mitsubishi said: “Eclipse derives its name from the MMC’s popular specialty coupe model sold in the U.S. from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover.
“Eclipse is a word used to describe an astronomical event. Marrying stylish coupe lines with the freedom of movement the SUV genre gives, the Eclipse Cross’ beautiful, dynamic form serves to bring about the same sense of excitement and inspiration as the diamond ring seen immediately before and after a total solar eclipse does. The high-saturation red body color newly developed for the model is also reflected in the name to evoke the brilliance of the prominence seen during the total solar eclipse.”
We don’t know a huge amount about the new Eclipse Cross but we know it will join the line-up alongside the ASX, Outlander and Outlander PHEV, continuing Mitsubishi’s promise at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show to focus on SUVs going forward.
Styling features of the Eclipse Cross include a wedge-shape belt line, a “forceful character line running through the side, a more steeply raked rear window, and long wheelbase with short rear overhang proportions. Together with heavily flared front and rear fenders, these elements create a dynamic and sporty design that engenders the powerful image of a stocky track athlete”.
