British actor, Idris Elba has broken the ‘Flying Mile’ UK land speed record set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1927 hitting 180.361mph (or 288.512km/h).

ACTOR IDRIS ELBA has set a new UK land speed record for a ‘Flying Mile’ of 180.361mph on Pendine Sands, Wales. He was driving a 2015 Bentley Continental GT and filming a new TV show called Idris Elba: No Limits. The original Flying Mile record was set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1927 who hit 174.8mph in his Napier-Campbell Blue Bird.The record was independently verified by the UK Timing Association.

Elba, who famously played Nelson Mandela in the multi-award winning Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, said: “I’m absolutely elated to have broken the ‘Flying Mile’ at Pendine Sands. It’s an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell.”
