A new high-performance 2.3L Ford Mustang will arrive in Australia in 2020 boasting 236kW and 448Nm of torque – the highest output of any four-cylinder Mustang.

A new high-performance Ford Mustang will arrive in Australia in February 2020, and when it does it will see an end to the regular EcoBoost Mustang. So, for now, if you want the slower Mustang, get in quick, because from early next year only a more-power four-cylinder Mustang and the V8-powered GT will be available. It will be available as both a Fastback and Convertible.

The 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang, when it arrives, will be the most powerful, road-going four-cylinder Mustang available, boasting 236kW and 448Nm of torque. You’ll be able to buy it with either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission. How did Ford get more power? Easy, they used the same, bigger, turbocharger as the Focus RS.

Speaking about the more-power, four-cylinder Mustang, Carl Widmann, Chief Program Engineer, Ford Mustang said: “It’s not just the power gains over the previous 2.3-litre engine. It’s the broader torque curve that delivers 90 percent of peak torque between 2500 and 5300rpm. Plus, horsepower holds stronger up to the 6500-rpm redline – enabling more usable power and torque.”

A final drive ratio of 3.55:1 has also been specified from the previous 3.31:1 on manual-transmission-equipped models, the same as on 10-speed automatic versions. Ford’s genius MagneRide suspension is also available as an option. In addition to improved weight distribution, a thicker 32mm front stabiliser bar has been fitted while the rear stabiliser bar too has increased in size from 21.7mm to 24mm for improved handling.

“The High Performance 2.3L helps extend Mustang’s already broad appeal,” said Kay Hart, Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO. “With distinctive looks, increased equipment level and bold colour choices, the turbocharged model is a welcome addition to the line-up, bringing a freshness to the range while still being pure Mustang.”

The high-power Mustang will get specific styling tweaks to help it stand out, including a new grille, the splitter from the Mustang GT. It will feature stand-along badging as well as an offset Pony tribar at the front, with the same red-white-and-blue design on the rear centre cap. Fastback versions will feature a Magnetic lip spoiler as standard, while both body styles boast unique badging and machine-finished 19-inch alloy wheels showing off premium Brembo brakes with red front calipers. Four new colours have been added to the Mustang line-up: Twister Orange and Grabber Lime, Iconic Silver, and Rapid Red.

Active safety includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection, as well as Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keeping Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The Ford Service Benefits program now covers MY2020 Mustang which means that for the first four years or 60,000km (whichever comes first), eligible customers will be able to service their MY2020 Mustang 2.3L High Performance for a maximum recommended price of $299 (incl. GST) per A or B logbook service at participating dealerships.
