Thanks goodness its Friday. Kick back and enjoy this 1980s promotional video for the Tamiya Hilux RA1028 which was produced between 1982 and 1985.

THESE DAYS WE’RE used to seeing car companies release teaser videos showing their latest and greatest creation both on the road and off it too. But this classic promotional video for the Tamiya Hilux RA1028 which was built between 1982 and 1985, shows an remote-controlled car being tortured and talked about in the same way car companies talk about actual cars… It’s genius.

It’s a pretty simple premise; show your product doing what it does best, indeed, it emulates the full-size Hilux and drives across sand dunes and through canyons, and then through axle-deep water. Me, I always lusted after a Tamiya Dune Buggy, but if I’d known about this Toyota Hilux I’d have gone for it instead. Who’s with me?

A quick search online throws up forums where people are selling them, but there seems to be huge competition for the things.

Fast forward to now, though, and Tamiya offers a huge range of R/C cars based on modern vehicles, including this Toyota FJ Cruiser… not sure it has the same pull as the Hilux (pardon the pun) and probably isn’t as tough underneath, but it’s still pretty cool.
