2020 Subaru Levorg revealed

Subaru’s Impreza wagon will continue into the next decade with a new boxer engine and sportier handling.

THE JAPANESE BRAND has revealed its new update to the Levorg at the Tokyo Motor Show overnight.

Subaru says its Impreza wagon on display is only a production prototype though we wouldn’t expect much to change when it hits showrooms in Japan late-2020.

Over the outgoing model which has been on sale in Australia for three years now, we see a new front fascia, LED headlights and some revision to the rear styling. But the key for enthusiast drivers will be new underpinnings and a new boxer turbo engine.

The 2020 Levorg sits on the latest Subaru Global Platform that has recently slid underneath the Impreza, Forester, and XV, bringing ride and handling improvements to all of those models.

Departing with the outgoing model is the 1.6-litre turbo engine, replaced with a new 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine that will give a familiar Subaru rumble from upfront.

Being a prototype, there are no further details, but we’re sure Subaru will begin making noise about its performance credentials next year, closer to launch.

Availability and pricing for Australia are yet to be confirmed and a long way off, given the model likely won’t land until around 2021.

I see in the photos that the sliver line under the window extends the whole way- a strange omission in previous models. The 2.0L was too thirsty, the 1.6L not powerful enough so hopefully something in between will work. The option of a more sporting derived transmission- Manual or DSG- and rear air vents would be good inclusions too. I’ve seen a few of these on the roads and they look really good.
