Toyota Australia has announced the release of the HiLux Black which is also available in, um, White as standard. Confusing.

THE COSMETIC-ENHANCEMENTS ONLY HiLux Black is priced from $53,240 (+ORC) for the manual-toting version in, er, Glacier White. If you want the black paint you’ll have to stump up another $550. Only 1000 HiLux Black models will be built; based on the SR5 4×4 Double Cab pickup it attracts a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Like all HiLux models, it is covered by Toyota Service Advantage at a maximum of $170 per service.

The HiLux Black gets black side steps, sports bar and leather-accented interior trim including a six-way adjustable power-operated driver’s seat, new-design 17-inch alloys are painted black behind brightly machined six-spoke facades. There are new-look front and rear bumpers that feature a black lower front grille with a contrasting red stripe along the bottom edge. LED daylight running lamps are specified for the first time on a HiLux in Australia.

Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or the five-speed automatic transmission introduced earlier this year.
