Further details emerge which show how Ford plans to take on the Jeep Wrangler with its upcoming Bronco.
DIAGRAMS HAVE BEEN uncovered which show patents lodged by Ford for a removable roof based on the T6 Ford Ranger and Everest platform. While that might hint at a removable hardtop for the Aussie Ranger – also available in the US – it is unlikely the aging generation PX Ranger will ever get an open-air option.
Instead, the patents (unveiled by website Ford Authority) strongly suggest that Ford’s new rival to the Jeep Wrangler – the upcoming Bronco – will match Jeep’s off-roader by having removable doors (revealed earlier this year in previous patents) and a removable hard top roof.
The drawings indicate a simple four clamp arrangement on the outermost points of the roof which should make removal and fitting a simple affair, and there’s a rear window port for loading long items. Furthermore, the diagram is based on a dual-cab ute, which means there could be a Bronco ute (yet to be confirmed) to challenge Jeep’s Wrangler-based Gladiator pickup – the latter coming to Australia soon.
Despite the new Bronco being developed on the right-hand drive compatible T6 Ranger platform the retro-rival of the famous nameplate will not be offered here. However, some development if happening Down Under by Ford Australia if the numerous sightings of test mules driving around the country are anything to go by.
It is rumoured we might see the Bronco debut as early as the Los Angeles motor show in November this year, ahead of its on sale in the US in 2020.
