The 2018 BMW X4 has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
THE NEW 2018 BMW X4 has been revealed and will get its public debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show. This is the second-generation X4, the original has sold more than 200,000 units around the world, so, there clearly was an interest in a quirky-looking medium SUV.
According to BMW, the “Exterior design of the all-new BMW X4 is a picture of powerful agility and self-assured presence”. For me, it just looks like a mini X6. This new model is longer (+84mm) and wider (+37mm) and, thus, gets a longer wheelbase (+54mm), too. The boot is bigger than the old car, now 525 litres and 1430 litres with the rear seats folded.
The interior follows the path of other recent BMWs with a robust but elegant looking interior; it gets new sports seats, steering wheel and infotainment screens as the major interior changes.
To ensure that just about no two X4s will be the same, BMW is opening the X4 to xLine, M Sport X and M Sport variants as well as the BMW Individual Portfolio. Two BMW M Performance models available: BMW X4 M40i and BMW X4 M40d beefed up engines, plus model-specific design and equipment features, like a new steering wheel shared with other models including the X3 and 5 Series.
There are a broad range of engines featuring three petrol and three diesel units and power outputs between 135kW and 265kW. All engines are mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. BMW said it’s lightened the chassis on the new X4, but didn’t say by how much (although the total weight of the vehicle is down by 50Kg compared to the old car thanks to the CLAR platform it shares with the X3 and others), and while you’d expect this to make the thing a little pointier on the road, we won’t know for sure until we drive it. Extra cost options, include Variable Sport Steering, Performance Control, Adaptive M suspension, M Sport differential and M Sport brakes.
The new X4 gets iDrive 6 which includes voice and gesture control functionality as well as smartphone mirroring.
The new X4 is expected into Australia towards the end of this year. There’s no word yet on pricing or the local line-up of engines, etc.
