Land Rover has confirmed its new model will be called the Range Rover Velar after many hints and speculation.

THE RANGE ROVER VELAR has been teased today ahead of its full reveal on March 1. The Range Rover Velar will bridge the gap between Evoque and Range Rover Sport, and has been teased via a top-down shot revealing a glass roof and rally-style vents for its rear spoiler.

But the image reveals more than that… peer through the glass roof and into the cabin and you’ll see the Range Rover Velar will show-off a new style of dashboard and infotainment touchscreen for Range Rover. The photo also suggests a wrap around, Riva hoop-esque ring from under the windscreen and down along the side of the vehicle.

Range Rover Velar teased

The name Range Rover Velar is a nod to the name given to the Range Rover development mules back in the 1970s. To throw journalists off the scent that Land Rover was planning a luxury 4×4, 26 pre-production Range Rovers were badged as Velar, which is derived from the Latin word, velare, meaning ‘cover’.

Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover.  It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

Stay tuned for information about the Range Rover Velar, and full images on March 1.
