Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² details revealed [video]

Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² details revealed with the brand stating it’ll make a decision to put it into production based on crowd reaction. So, get excited…

AFTER AN image of the G500 4×4² leaked online last week, Mercedes-Benz has today released a full set of images and more details on the concept 4×4 that will be unveiled in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the running gear for the G500 4×4² has been taken from the G63 AMG 6×6, including portal axles. Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre V8 thumping out 310kW; this new engine meets Euro6 specifications which means this is probably more than just a show car. Although, Mercedes-Benz is saying it wants to measure “reaction which the near-series show car receives” before confirming production.

The G500 4×4² sits on 22-inch alloys wrapped in 325/55 R22 rubber and gets detachable carbon-fibre bits and pieces, such as the flared wheel arches and roof-mounted light bar – the front bumper is off the G63 model. Cost-optional 37×12.5×18-inch MT tyres are available, or will be when the thing goes into production, nudge nudge.

With a wider track (+299mm) than the production G Wagen, thanks to the portal axles and adjustable dampers the G500 4×4² when in Sport mode will, says Mercedes-Benz make occupants “feel as though they’re in a sports car rather than a cross-country vehicle”.

As an off-roader, the G500 4×4² is well set up out of the box, with permanent all-wheel drive, an off-road reduction in the transfer case, portal axles and three differentials lockable whilst on the move. Portal axles, as opposed to conventional rigid axles, allow the wheels to be mounted lower down than the centre of the axle. This allows for greater ground clearance, with the G500 4×4² getting 450mm of clearance allowing it a fording depth of 1000mm.

The show car tweaking continues inside, with the G500 4×4² boasting a designo Exclusive package. The seat bolsters and head restraints as well as the dashboard, centre console and armrests in the doors are styled in black designo leather with white contrasting topstitching. The seat surfaces and door panels are covered in DINAMICA as is the roof liner and the body pillars.
