Pricing, specs and the release date for the all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler have been announced, with the off-roader arriving here in April from $48,950+ORC.

The all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler will arrive Down Under in April with prices starting at $48,950+ORC for the entry-level Sport S and rising to $68,950+ORC for the Rubicon four-door. There will be two engines available. Sort of. While all variants will be fitted with a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine, the top-spec Rubicon will arrive with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine making 146kW and 347Nm of torque. This engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and get start-stop.

The Wrangler bombed in EuroNCAP testing, realising only one star because of a lack of things like ISOFIX mounts for the back seat and any active safety features as well as limited airbag coverage. But, here in Australia, what will likely be one of the most important tests for ANCAP, the Wrangler will, across its range, feature a range of standard and variant-dependent active safety elements, like Auto Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView Rear Backup Camera with Dynamic Grid Lines, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM).

But don’t get too carried away. The entry model gets no active safety and it’s not until the Overland that autonomous emergency braking makes it onto the standard safety features list. So, it could be that ANCAP may have to provide a split rating for the Wrangler.

Jeep claims it has improved on-road ride and handling but improving the aerodynamics of the boxy Wrangler was a vital component in improving fuel efficiency. Indeed, Jeep said, “subtle changes to the iconic features including a slightly tilted windscreen, tilted keystone-shaped grille, vented hood and a tapering C-pillar. These modifications have considerably reduced wind noise and improved fuel efficiency by over 13%, without straying from the classic boxy body the Jeep Wrangler is known for”.
