Interestingly, BMW’s decision to include a 5 Series Touring (wagon) in its local line-up will see it the lone player in the premium large wagon segment. Mercedes-Benz communications executive, Jerry Stamoulis confirmed to Practical Motoring it “doesn’t have any plans at this stage” to import the E-Class Estate  and will only bring in its pumped-up all-wheel drive All-Terrain E-Class variant (which arrives towards the middle of this year).

Speaking at last week’s BMW Range Day event, BMW’s head of product and marketing planning, Shawn Ticehurst said the 5 Series Touring was “very much a part of BMW’s DNA” and that while it expected demand to be limited, “we have customers that absolutely expect to see that vehicle in our line-up – you can’t have a 5 Series without the Touring”.

BMW hasn’t yet confirmed in what specification and with which engine the 5 Series Touring will arrive. But, there will be four 5 Series sedans, and these are priced accordingly:

BMW 520d – From $93,900+ORC – $15,500 in added value;

BMW 530i – From $108,900+ORC – $16,000 in added value compared to outgoing 528i;

BMW 530d – From $119,900+ORC – $16,000 in added value compared with outgoing 535d; and

BMW 540i – From $136,900+ORC – $34,000 in added value compared with preceding 535i variant.
