The all-new Mazda CX-30 has been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, making it the second vehicle in the line-up to show off the brand’s new design language.

Following in the footsteps of the Mazda3 with its exterior and interior looks, the Mazda CX-30 (expected to have been named CX-4) is another new compact SUV that will roll out to markets around the world later this year. Surely adding some confusion to where it sits with CX-3… Here’s how.

The CX-30 slots between the CX-3 and the CX-5 with lengths of 4395mm, 4275mm and 4545mm, respectively. So, there’s not a lot in it. But with a wheelbase of 2655mm, the CX-30 will offer near CX-5 levels of interior space: 2700mm (CX-5) and 2570mm (CX-3). The boot space offers around 430 litres of storage space.

In its announcement, Mazda said, “the Mazda CX-30 was designed to be easy to drive. The increased height over a passenger car provides excellent visibility and makes getting in and out a breeze, while the body size makes it easy to manoeuvre on any road and in any parking lot”.

“We designed the CX-30 to be an essential partner in the customer’s daily life,” said Akira Marumoto, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO. “It will be made at key global plants so we can deliver Mazda’s renowned driving pleasure and matured Kodo design to customers all over the world. Moving forward, our new products and technologies will ensure customers continue to see the value in owning a Mazda car. We aim to be recognised as a brand that forms the strongest of bonds with each customer.”

Mazda will offers its range of petrol and diesel Skyactiv engines as well as its new Skyactiv-X engine for the CX-30. And it also debuts a larger 8.8-inch infotainment screen that Mazda says is simpler to use because you only use the centre-console mounted controller…surely it’s still touchscreen?

Other changes include tweaks to Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system around improving dynamic performance and fuel efficiency. And, like the Mazda3, CX-30 gets the latest-generation G-vectoring control for improved steering performance, and there have been improvements to NVH too.

Question: Is the CX-30 a case of saturation for Mazda, and will it rob CX-3 sales?
