BMW will use the UKL1 Mini platform to release six new front-wheel drive models by 2017, according to a report.

BRITISH PUBLICATION Auto Express claims BMW, following hot on the heels of its front-wheel drive 2 Series Active Tourer (which sits on the same UKL1 platform as the new Mini), will release six new front-wheel drive models based on the company’s new UKL1 platform, which sits under the new Mini range. These new models, the report states, will be powered by three-cylinder turbocharged engines.

Apparently, the next of BMW’s front-drive models will be the seven seat 2 Series Active Tourer, due out later this year, and will be followed by a range of new SUV variants, including a new X1 and X2 coupe-SUV which will be offered with xDrive all-wheel drive. According to Auto Express, BMW is also planning a front-drive Z2 roadster.

If this is all true the decision to go front-drive marks a radical change for BMW and while the move will undoubtedly bring more buyers to the brand, it’ll be interesting to see what purists make of it. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
