The Renault Alaskan concept has been revealed today with Renault admitting it would have a ‘global’ production version ready to roll in 2016.
CURRENTLY THE RENAULT Duster Oroch dual-cab ute is only available in Latin America, but the recent announcement that Mercedes-Benz would build a ute with the NP300 Navara as its base means that Renault too will also be releasing a NP300 Navara-based ute. And the Renault Alaskan concept is the very close to reality teaser of that ‘global’ ute which will hit the road in early Australia and, given Australia’s love affair with utes, you’d have to think it would be on the cards to come here.
Much of the car has been tricked up for its reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show, meaning it gets comically big 21-inch alloys, an oddball light bar and weird looking wing mirrors. But the actual design of the thing is likely to be pretty close to reality. Or, so we hope.
Renault says the production version of the Alaskan Concept will have the same dimensions as the concept, although it doesn’t say what they are. It does, however, state it’ll get a payload of 1000kg and will be available in a range of body styles and in 4×4 and 4×2 variants.
Laurens van den Acker, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Design, said: “The styling of the ALASKAN Concept sticks to the rules of the pick-up segment, including impressive dimensions and a visual sense of power and robustness. At the same time, we have dialed in specific Renault cues in the form of an attractive, status-enhancing front-end design.”
