The 2020 Skoda Superb iV has been revealed and while its Superb and Superb Scout siblings will be available later this year, the plug-in electric variant won’t make it to market until early in 2020. The Superb iV runs a 1.4-litre petrol engine (115kW) and a rear-mounted electric motor (85kW) and battery pack for a combined 160kW and 400Nm of torque an electric-driving range of 55km (via the WLTP cycle) and a total range of around 850km.

This is Skoda’s first production plug-in hybrid and draws off the technology of the wider VW Group. The battery can be charged at home overnight using a conventional socket or in 3 hours and 30 minutes via a wallbox with a charging output of 3.6kWh. The charge point is located behind a flap in the grille. As is typical of this type of vehicle, it can be driven on battery alone or as a combination of both.

When being driven on battery power only, an onboard sound generator warns pedestrians there’s a silent Superb nearby.

From the outside, the Superb iV looks much like its regular Superb siblings with the charging socket and iV badges the main giveaways. The lithium-ion battery pack eats up a little bit of storage space reducing the boot to 485 litres in the sedan and 510 litres in the wagon.

On the inside, there are some minor tweaks mainly to do with the infotainment system which is unique to this model and can be option with a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Via the screen, the driver can access a iV specific sub-menu with things like distance to battery depletion, or the current charge level.
