BMW has announced the xDrive35d will top the X4 range, priced from $89,900 (+ORC).

BMW’S X CARS are its SUV range, and are offered in two-wheel drive (rear drive, unusual for the market but not for BMW) and all-wheel drive configuration, with the xDrive transmission. The X1 is the baby of the range, then there’s the X3 hatch and X4 coupe, then the X5 wagon and X6 coupe.

BMW has now released the xDrive35d, or all-wheel-drive, 3.0L. This is a turbo diesel, as there’s no M-car performance version of the X4 in the same way that there is for the X5 and X6.

The X4 xDrive35d is powered by a 3.0 litre, six cylinder engine, even though there’s a “35” in the name. The motor is good for 230kW, 630Nm of torque and gets it from 0-100 in 5.2 seconds…. and you get around 6L/100km on the combined cycle. There’s all the usual luxury and safety features you’d expect from BMW too.

The X4 has an excellent all-wheel-drive system as we found when testing one in New Zealand on snow, but it lacks the clearance for actual offroad work.  However, it is a sharp-handling luxury SUV primarily for on-road use.
