New 2017 Mazda2 gets improved safety equipment and more…

The new Mazda2 which is on-sale now has copped a raft of active safety features and a new model.

THE REFRESHED 2017 Mazda2 has gone on-sale boasting improved safety features and a new model, the now top-spec GT variant. The new Mazda2 will be available with blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert on Genki and GT variants, while standard across the range is Mazda’s smart city brake (autonomous emergency braking) in forwards and reverse from the Maxx variant up, meaning the entry-level Neo misses out.

There are now four variants in the hatch range: Neo, Maxx, Genki and GT, and three in the sedan range: Neo, Maxx and GT.

In addition to improved safety features, the new Mazda2 also gets Mazda’s G-Vectoring control which is designed to make steering inputs smoother. Ride and handling has been improved, says Mazda, through updates to suspension bushings, front and rear dampers and a recalibration of the electric power steering, while wind noise has been reduced with a noise-insulating windscreen and new engine compartment insulation. “High frequency road noise has been lowered by added luggage compartment insulation and damping material”.

Every model in the range also receives an updated trim package, with Neo, Maxx and Genki offering their own individual black cloth designs, GT hatch comes in pure white leather (practical… not), and the GT sedan has black leather seats with a synthetic suede insert, coupled with deep brown accents on the seat, dashboard and door trims. On the outside, the electric folding side mirrors – that fold automatically on high spec variants – have been re-designed and include integrated indicators.

The Mazda2 is powered by a 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine, with a tweaked alternative for Maxx, Genki and GT models featuring i-stop (stop/start), mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

The New Mazda2 is on sale now with no change to pricing.
