Kia does not seem to have any plan to replace the Stinger, although it does have a new halo sports car.

The Kia Stinger has been a successful halo car for Kia and added some oomph to display what the brand can produce. But despite its admirable place in the lineup, it does not appear it will have a direct replacement – although it will also be replaced, sort of.

Kia first launched the Stinger GT in 2017 and it has seen some revisions along the way. While the turbo four-cylinder brings nippy performance, it has been the V6 twin-turbo that placed it as a proper sports car. The Stinger’s low profile also brought some proper handling to make it a sports car.

But according to Kia design head, Karim Habib, who spoke to British outlet Autocar, the Stinger will live on as a model in history and will have a spiritual successor in the new EV6.

“The spirit of Stinger remains and will remain. I like to think that the EV6 has the genes of the GT. We’re doing to do a GT of that, and it has the Stinger in it,” he said at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

“Stinger has been a transformational car, and opened a whole new perspective as to what Kia can be, sporty and a precision driving tool. EV6 is now doing similar.”

The EV6 which is available now in Australia will launch a new GT version that brings over 400kW and performance to rival the likes of some much pricier alternatives.

The Kia Stinger GT will remain on sale for a while to come in the meantime, with facelifts and revision until 2023 or 2024.
