Expected to be Audi’s answer to the Tesla Model X SUV, the Audi e-tron quattro concept SUV will have the covers taken off it next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

LAST MONTH, Audi teased its Tesla Model X fighter, the e-tron quattro and now it’s shown even more of the thing. The e-tron quattro concept will spawn the Audi Q6 which will be available with an electric all-wheel drive power train, at least initially, anyway.

Based on the second-generation MLB platform, the Q6 will, not surprisingly, slot between the Q5 and Q7, and is expected to go on-sale in 2018 as the brand’s first volume all-electric production vehicle.

According to Audi, a “large” lithium-ion battery sits down nice and low right in the middle of the car and beneath the passenger area; allegedly the battery when fully charged will provide enough spark to travel up to 500km – this is more than the range of the Tesla Model X. The e-tron concept / Q6 will run three electric motors, one at the front and two at the back which is based off the production R8 e-tron. Inside, there’s room for four passengers.

While the e-tron quattro concept / Q6 will be revealed in full at the Frankfurt Motor Show, we’re expecting it to be revealed online before then. Stay tuned.

  1. Its a brave new world. Still I’m not convinced full battery is ready to be embraced even in 2018. Does it need such a large bonnet given leccy motors tend to sit inline with axles. I suspect we will see a phev version with a large capacity triple.
