2015 BMW X5 M and X6 M revealed
BMW has released images and details of its 2015 BMW X5 M and X6 M models ahead of their global debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
BMW HAS REVEALED details and images of its new BMW X5 M and X6 M high-performance SUVs ahead of their official debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show before going on-sale in Australia sometime in 2015.
Both models get the same 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that’s used in both the M5 and M6, and that means more power and torque compared with their predecessors but also improved fuel efficiency. The 4.4L twin-turbo V8 produces 423kW (at 6000rpm) and 750Nm of torque (from 2200-5000rpm) with fuel economy in both vehicles listed as a combined 11.1L/100km (a 20% reduction over the previous generation models). Both models will get to 100km/h from a standing start in just 4.2 seconds and that’s eye-wateringly quick for such big vehicles.
Ensuring all that grunt gets to the ground is an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and a permanent multi-plate clutch all-wheel drive system. This system unlike many others, is capable of sending 100% of drive to either the front or rear axle. Both the BMW X5 M and X6 M offer brake energy recuperation and stop/start function as part of their BMW Efficient Dynamics package.
In addition to the engine and drivetrain, BMW engineers also worked on the suspension to give the X5 M and X6 M, M-specific ride and handling characteristics. To that end, both vehicles feature a modified upper front wishbone, firmer springs and dampers which offer a 10mm drop in ride height over other X6 and X6 models.
Both models get air suspension with self-levelling rear axle and electronically adjustable dampers offering three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. The electronic stability control, like other M models, also offers three different modes.
Setting the two models apart from their garden-variety siblings are a new front bumper with larger air intakes for improved cooling, quad pipes at the back and a rear spoiler for the X6 M. Buyers can select from M-specific 20-inch light-alloy wheels with mixed tyres (standard) or forged 21-inch M light-alloy wheels (cost optional).
