VW has finally unveiled its new MK8 Golf and plenty has changed.
THE GERMAN MAKER has unveiled images and details of its new Golf which will come to Australia late-2020.
Outside, we see there isn’t a large change from the traditional upright hatch design which keeps packaging inside practical and roomy.
Exterior dimensions aren’t significantly larger, measuring 4284mm long, 1789mm wide and 1456mm tall – 26mm longer and 4mm taller while 10mm narrower. The wheelbase, which now measures 2636mm, is 16mm longer, and increase leg space for rear-seat passengers.
The headlights and lower bumper receive the biggest change visually, the headlights much slenderer than before and the lower front now a large gaping intake. Around back the familiar silhouette receives some tweaks and new LED taillights.
Oh, and check out the nose – that’s VW’s new logo.
While the exterior isn’t a dramatic change from what we’ve already seen, the interior is. Inside is a large digital dash that challenges the long twin-screen setup the Mercedes-Benz A-Class employs. The infotainment side measure 10.0-inch wide and the driver’s cluster 10.25-inches, and incorporate VW’s WeConnect Plus which provides internet-enabled services such as traffic and live route updates, cloud streaming of music and more.
There are also smaller capacitive buttons replacing traditional buttons underneath and next to the steering wheel, seeing a much cleaner interface across the dash. On the steering wheel are plenty of options for automated driving assists too, so expect plenty of leading technology in the new Mk8 Golf that VW will roll out into more new models.
Engine options revealed for now include three turbo petrol 48volt mild-hybrid eTSI drivetrains producing outputs of 81kW, 96kW and 110kW.
There will also be more powerful plug-in hybrid variants wearing the GTE badge, producing 150kW and 180kW and able to drive using the electric motor only for around 60km.
Further details and figures for the hot hatch GTI and R have not been detailed, though the all-wheel-drive R is expected to produce up to 245kW.
