Production of the Volkswagen Beetle has come to an end after the last car produced at Volkswagen de Mexico’s Puebla plant rolled off the line.
Serenaded by a Mariachi band, the last ever Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the line at Volkswagen de Mexico’s Puebla plant yesterday. The Denim Blue coupe will be given to VW’s local museum in Puebla.
Fittingly, in our SUV-crazed times, the Beetle, in production since 1938, has fallen out of favour around the world with the Puebla production line switching to production, for the North American market, of the Tarek compact SUV to slot in below the Tiguan) which is also built at the factory.
“It’s impossible to imagine where Volkswagen would be without the Beetle,” said Scott Keogh, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “From its first import in 1949 [into the US] to today’s retro-inspired design, it has showcased our company’s ability to fit round pegs into square holes of the automotive industry. While its time has come, the role it has played in the evolution of our brand will be forever cherished.”
The Volkswagen Beetle went off-sale in Australia in 2016.
