The 2020 Skoda Superb has been revealed at the Ice Hockey World Championships along with the launch of the brand’s iV electric vehicle sub-brand.
The 2020 Skoda Superb has been teased for weeks but was finally revealed last weekend at the Ice Hockey World Championships. While the design is more of a careful tweaking, there are some big changes to the brand’s flagship model.
For instance, the new Superb gets full LED Matrix headlights (the first time on a production Skoda vehicle) which offer a light beam broken into segments that can be altered on the move to prevent dazzling oncoming traffic or when reflecting off signs to prevent the driver’s eyes from being dazzled. A camera mounted in the windscreen controls this functionality. The tail-lights too are LED and the indicators are now dynamic, like we’ve seen on Audi and some VW product.
Beyond the headlights, there are two other clever systems making their debut on a Skoda and they are the Predictive Cruise Control which via a camera and using the sat-nav can automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed in anticipation of a speed limit change. There’s also an Emergency Assist which has been designed for multi-lane roads and can, if needed, actively steer the vehicle to the side of the road considering traffic around it; it does this with the assistance of the Side Assist radar. Other newbies include Predictive Pedestrian Protection and a new aerodynamic cover on the rear axle to reduce lift at high speeds and thus improve stability.
There are three new diesels and three new petrol engines available on the Superb (in addition to the plug-in hybrid Superb iV – detailed separately). All the engines meet the new stringent Euro6-d TEMP emissions regulations and have been tested against the WLTP which has held up the arrival Down Under of other VW Group product.
There’s a 1.6 TDI engine making 88kW which is mated to a seven-speed DSG, a 2.0 TDI making 110kW which runs through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. A top-spec 2.0 TDI engine making 140kW with a seven-speed DSG as standard and either front- or all-wheel drive.
The 1.5 TSI petrol engine makes 110kW and can be matched to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG, a 2.0 TSI making 140kW and the top-spec 2.0 TSI making 200kW with all-wheel drive and seven-speed DSG as standard.
The new Superb is 8mm longer than the old car, or 6mm longer in the wagon, the wheelbase and width are the same. The boot space runs from 625-1760L in the Superb Sedan and from 660-1950L in the wagon.
As far as the design goes, the Superb gets a tweak to its grille, headlights and front and rear bumpers. On the inside, there are tweaks to the trim with contrast stitching on the seats and Alcantara cost-optional seats and trim, including the roof lining available. There’s a new 9.2-inch infotainment system and digital display.
