New 2019 Mitsubishi Triton Revealed…here in January 2019
The new 2019 Mitsubishi Triton has been revealed in Thailand with sales to begin later this month…Australia will have to wait until January 2019.
The new 2019 Mitsubishi Triton has been spied and teased for months now and finally Mitsubishi has whipped the covers off it in Thailand (where it is built) boasting about 2400 changes being made to it. It will go on-sale in that country on November 17 but Australia will have to wait until January 2019.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, new Triton will eventually be sold in 150 countries and is the second-best-selling vehicle in the entire Mitsubishi line-up behind Outlander.
Speaking at the reveal, Mitsubishi Motors CEO Osamu Masuko stated: “The New TRITON/L200 is one of our most important global strategic models. Its success will accelerate the momentum of the company’s sustainable growth. The new model brings enhancements to the durability, reliability and comfort developed over the 40 years since the introduction of the series.
“I am fully confident the New TRITON/L200 will meet the diverse needs and wishes of our customers around the world.”
The most noticeable difference is the new-look Dynamic Shield snout and sculpted sides but Mitsubishi reckons the new Triton offers improved off-road performance and the “latest in active safety and driver assistance features”. On the inside, there’s much greater use of soft-touch materials and nice to have elements like wireless phone charging, roof-mounted air vents for rear seat passengers and more.
But it’s how the Triton performs off-road that many will most be interested in and there are two options now…Mitsubishi’s proven Super-Select 4WD system or an Easy-Select 4WD system which makes it easier to switch between 2WD, 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo. Both systems offer a new terrain-based off-road mode that allows access to tune the car’s performance for GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND and ROCK (only available in low-range) settings. Mitsubishi hasn’t said too much, “When engaged, Off-road Mode integrally controls engine power, transmission and braking to regulate the amount of wheel slip and thereby maximise all-terrain performance and self-extraction performance in mud or snow”. The new Triton also offers hill descent control.
With crash testing becoming tougher around the world, and commercial vehicles expected to offer passenger-car levels of safety, Mitsubishi is offering the Triton with a raft of active safety features. But it hasn’t said whether they’ll be standard across the range or model specific.
New Triton gets: Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM); Blind Spot Warning (BSW with LCA); Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA); Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS) which is a low-speed version of RCTA and is intended to stop you from over accelerating when reversing out of a carpark.
It’ll also offers a surround view camera set up to generate a birds-eye view of the vehicle for parking purposes.
According to Mitsubishi, Triton’s front brakes have been beefed up and the ride improved via larger rear dampers to improve performance when loaded and unloaded. And there’s been a swtich from a five-speed automatic to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engines are carry over but there’s no word yet on whether power and torque will be improved – given stricter controls in some markets on fuel consumption and emissions testing via the WLTP we expect some changes for some markets.
The dimensions of the vehicle are all identical to the old one, so much so, that tonneau covers will fit from the pre-factlifted model on the new one. This means towing and tray load remains the same…
