Jeep Grand Cherokee towbar recalled
FCA Australia has issued a recall for more than 2300 tow bars fitted to WK Jeep Grand Cherokee models after May 31 2017.
FCA AUSTRALIA has issued an immediate recall on 2350 tow bars fitted to WK Jeep Grand Cherokee models after 31 May 2017 due to “safety concerns”. An internal investigation by FCA Australia allegedly discovered that “tow bars may lose torque during towing. A loss of fastener torque could lead to the tow bar becoming loose. If a tow bar becomes loose, it may result in the tow bar and trailer (if towing) becoming detached from the vehicle”.
According to FCA Australia, the affected tow bar kits were:
- sold after 31 May 2017; and
- can be identified with either:
- part number LA82210140 (which fits Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited and Overland models); or
- part number LA82210141 (which fits Grand Cherokee Summit and SRT models).
The brand says that no other tow bars are affected by this recall and that it isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents related to this recall.
FCA Australia is advising owners to stop using the “tow bar immediately” and to contact FCA Australia Customer Care on 1300 133 079 or an authorised Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer.
“Affected customers will be notified when they may schedule a repair, which will be provided free of charge,” FCA Australia said.
We were on the way back from the outback when we checked emails and saw the recall notice. Called the service team as we were towing our caravan with our Jeep. The service centre suggested we take it to a mechanic immediately. We did in Miles- fortunately 3km away. When they checked we had already lost 2 bolts and 4 other bolts were loose. So close to what could have been a major accident. Jeep roadside assistance offered to tow our caravan back to Brisabane but could only do Wednesday next week. We got a friend to drive to Miles to hook up the caravan with his Ute. Don’t take chances – check it you too could be as close to a disaster.
