The 2018 Land Rover Discovery which launches here this week has been awarded a five-star ANCAP rating following testing by Euro NCAP.

THE PREVIOUS GENERATION Land Rover Discovery sold here without an ANCAP rating, but the new one which launches here this week has been awarded a five-star rating by ANCAP. The Discovery underwent testing by Euro NCAP back in January with the results of those test seeing the new Disco score the following: 90% for Adult Occupant Protection, 80% for Child Occupant Protection, 75% for Pedestrian Protection and a Safety Assist score of 73%. This saw ANCAP rate it five stars here too.

“The Discovery earned its 5-star safety rating showing strengths in structure, design and equipment,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin.

“Crash test dummy readings indicated good levels of protection of all critical body regions in the side impact test as well as the more severe side pole test. Protection of the knees and femurs for both the driver and passenger in the frontal offset test was also good,”

“There was however insufficient pressure in the driver’s airbag which saw the dummy’s head contact the steering wheel and a penalty was applied in the scoring,” Goodwin said.

“The Discovery is fitted as standard with all three grades of autonomous emergency braking – City, Interurban and Vulnerable Road User – and all performed well during testing,” Mr Goodwin added.

Practical Motoring will be attending the local launch of the Land Rover Discovery early next week and will bring you our opinion sometime next week. In the meantime, check out our international preview drive of the new Discovery HERE.
