You can’t buy a Toyota HiLux Tonka but TRD makes a return to Australia with the 2017 Toyota HiLux SR5 TRD accessories pack…
ON THE BACK of Toyota’s HiLux Tonka reveal today, Toyota Australia has announced its new HiLux with TRD accessories pack. Available exclusively on the top-spec HiLux SR5, with only black or white exterior paint, the TRD (Toyota Racing Development) enhanced HiLux adds 15 new components to the ute.
Priced from $58,990 driveaway, the additions include a red TRD skid plate, TRD grille, TRD lower bump cover and TRD fender flares, new 18-inch black alloy wheels and matching black body moulds and sports bar.
At the rear the HiLux receives taillight covers, TRD mudflaps, ute liner and tonneau cover, The TRD HiLux also gets a towing kit (tongue, ball and wiring harness).
Inside there’s a few additions such as TRD branded floor mats and automatic models receive a TRD lever knob.
The HiLux TRD edition is powered by its familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine which produces 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque (six-speed automatic) and 420Nm of torque (six-speed intelligent manual).
Tony Cramb, executive director of sales and marketing at Toyota Australia, says only the top spec SR5 is available with TRD treatment because of its sales success.
“Local buyers voted with their wallets to make HiLux the best-selling vehicle in Australia last year – and the majority clearly indicated their preference for upmarket features combined with HiLux’s renowned go-anywhere capability,” Mr Cramb said.
“We have responded to that demand by compiling premium components, including the respected TRD brand, that will further distinguish HiLux from the competitors and from every other HiLux in our range,” he said.

These will sell because they look more appealing than the stock SR5. Pity they had to give it the TRD moniker because it’s unchanged performance values simply does not justify it.
