Report: No ‘baby Boxster’ as Porsche 718 cancelled
According to reports, Porsche has cancelled plans to build the Porsche 718 or baby Boxster. Shame.
DESPITE TALKING ABOUT and, indeed, all but confirming a new entry-level model way back 2010, Porsche’s R&D boss, Wolfgang Hatz has told Autocar the Porsche 718 is dead. And that it won’t be revived.
“The project is stopped. We have a very good entry point to the range with the Boxster, and we see no reason to go below that. Porsche should remain exclusive, and you cannot chase volume when you have such a brand. The Boxster (pictured) is our perfect entry point – we have already set the right entry level,” Hatz told Autocar.
Now, while some outlets have picked up on Hatz’s “chase volume” line and referred to the Cayenne and Macan as running counter to that claim, we think he’s referring to volume in the sports car sense.
The original plan was for the baby Boxster to share the same platform, with plenty of tweaking, no doubt, with the Audi A4 Roadster but that model too was cancelled and the economics of going it alone wouldn’t have made sense to the VW Group.
