VW introduces new permanent members of the 2020 Touareg 190TDI family which are cheaper but still just as luxe.

VW AUSTRALIA HAS launched two new diesel-powered Touareg 190TDI variants to replace the Launch Edition which was available in limited numbers this year.

The permanent additions to the lineup bring a healthy price cut for premium SUV shoppers, the entry-level Touareg 190TDI just over $10,000 more affordable than the Launch Edition and the feature-packed 190TDI Premium also undercuts it.

The new 190TDI kicks off the Touareg range from $79,490 plus on-road costs and is powered by the same 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel producing 190kW (hence the name) and 600Nm through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite a relief in price, equipment remains strong, the new starter model coming with 19-inch alloys, Vienna leather upholstery, heated and electrically adjusted front seats, large 9.2-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, keyless entry with electric opening tailgate, LED head and taillights and automatic rain-sensing wipers.

The main omissions in the 190TDI over the Launch Edition is that air suspension has been replaced with conventional spring and dampers, and the digital driver’s display is a traditional analogue binnacle rather than the large screen. However, both and more can be optioned in tailored packs, or you can buy the 190TDI Premium.

The next step up, the Touareg 190TDI Premium is priced at $85,490 and standard equipment includes air suspension, larger 20-inch alloys, LED Matrix headlights with automatic dimming and headlight washers, dynamic indicators and taillights, Savona leather trim and added massage and ventilation feature on the front seats.

Three cost-option packages are available. The $8000 Innovision package adds an even larger 15-inch infotainment and adjoining digital driver’s display, head up display on the windscreen, rolling volume wheel in the centre console, gloss black trims around the dash, ambient lighting, and steel scuff plates.

The R-Line package ($8000) is exclusive to the 190TDI Premium, which brings unique 20-inch alloy wheels, exterior R-Line bodykit, tinted windows, all-wheel steering (rear-wheel steering), 48v active roll stabilisation, R-Line interior trim with unique steering wheel and R-Line scuff plates.

All models come with a recent five-star ANCAP rating and comprehensive active safety suite including AEB with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, front and rear cross-traffic assist, parking assist, driver fatigue detection, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and 360-degree proactive occupant protection.
