Fiat Chrysler is recalling the 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee because of ignition switch issues which could cause a loss of engine power, and more.

FIAT CHRYSLER has announced a recall of the 2005-2007 model Jeep Grand Cherokee in Australia because “some vehicles may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving”. Dedicated followers of this sort of thing will know this is the same reason Fiat Chrysler recalled more than 690,000Jeep Grand Cherokees in the US, Canada and Mexico. At the time, the company announced there were more than 100,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees on the road around the world that were also affected. But that was back in July – we’ve reached out to Fiat Chrysler for an answer on why it took so long for the recall to reach Australia and will update this article when we hear back.

[Updated]: Practical Motoring spoke with Fiat Chrysler Australia yesterday which said although the recall was announced in the US in July it would notify owners in late September when the part required became available. Fiat Chrysler Australia said its recall announcement is in line with the second notification to owners in the US.

Back in July, Fiat Chrysler announced the recall was because of excess weight on the car key (caused by extra keys, etc) could cause the key to move in the ignition which “may result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking assist increasing the risk of crash and disabling one or more of the vehicle’s safety featuring including the frontal airbags”. This is a similar concern that saw GM in the US recall millions of vehicles this year.

According to Fiat Chrysler Jeep all customers will be informed of the recall by letter and a set of simple checks that can be carried out. An additional letter will be sent when repair instructions, part required is available.
