The all-new Mazda3 will go on-sale in Australia in April this year with prices starting at $25,990+ORC.
The all-new Mazda3 has had its Australian pricing revealed overnight in Melbourne with its arrival in the country slated for April this year. There are five models, Pure, Evolve, Touring, GT and Astina, all variants offered with both a manual and automatic transmission.
There are three engines available to the new Mazda3 line-up, a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder making 114kW and 200Nm of torque, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder making 139kW and 252Nm of torque – this engine also offers cylinder deactivation. Towards the end of the year, a third engine, Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X which is a petrol engine designed to emulate the torque and long-distance fuel efficiency characteristics of a diesel engine.
The new Mazda3 sees the Japanese car makers continue to address a problem it never said it had with continued improvement in NVH with the brand employing a two-wall approach to construction. This means there’s now an insulating space between the interior carpet and the body panel beneath it, instead of the former being glued directly to the latter. There are also new seals for doors and the tailgate, as well as sound-absorbing mats and liners and tweaks to the suspension to to remove road noise.
The interior of the Mazda3 heralds a design tweaking of the car maker’s interiors with use of soft touch materials and tactile finishes and trims. There’s also some design trickery with the dashboard stretche horizontally across the car to give a sense of width. To accommodate drivers of all shapes and sizes, Mazda said it had increased the range of movement for the steering wheel and all models get a height adjustable driver’s seat.
The centre touchscreen is now 8.8-inches wide and allows for a split-screen view, it includes voice control with a ‘barge-in’ function as well as having the owner’s manual digitally loaded onto the car and accessible via the infotainment screen.
The new Mazda3 looks to be a mixed bag in terms of practicality with the hatchback having a tiny boot offering just 295 litres of storage while the sedan offers a more substantial 444 litres.
In terms of active safety, Mazda3 comes standard with with Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) with Stop & Go, Smart Brake Support, Lane-keep Assist System (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). The top-spec Astina adds, as standard, Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) to monitor blind spots at the front left and right of the vehicle and Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS). The latter provides a small measure of autonomous driving in stop-start traffic, able to handle accelerating, braking and steering. These features are also available on all Mazda3 variants via the Vision Technology pack which is priced at $1500.
In terms of sales, Mazda is expecting the G20 Evolve to be the best-seller accounting for around 30% of sales in the first year. It expects the 2.0L engine to be the most popular, the hatch to win over the sedan and the automatic to be the transmission of choice at 90%.
