Three Bathurst icons to go under the hammer at Shannons
Three of Australia’s most collectable supercars are set to go under the hammer next month at Shannons but they won’t go cheap, with the three seeking to fetch over half a million dollars.
CARS THAT BATTLE at Bathurst are elevated to the status of Aussie Legend and on May 8th Shannons is auctioning three absolute classics which fought around the mountain – the Ford Falcon GT-HO, Holden Monaro GTS 327 and Chrysler Valiant Charger E38.
July 1970-built XW Falcon GT-HO Phase II sedan
Originally delivered by Byrne Ford of Chermside, Brisbane, this GT-HO never saw race duty after it was crashed by a mechanic early in testing.
The car later went on to have Phase III GT-HO cylinder heads fitted, along with mufflers and 15-inch Globe alloy wheels. It was also repainted during the 1970s in its original Diamond White colour and fitted with orange GT stripes, although its original gold stripes come with the car and it is now fitted with model-correct riveted 5-slot GT steel wheels.
Estimated price range: $180,000-$220,000
1969 Silver Mink HK Monaro GTS 327 coupe
A rare one-family-owned Monaro for almost the last 50 years, this GTS 327 was purchased new at Lock Motors, South Australia and features dealer-fitter air-conditioning and Air Chief Radio, and comes with original books and receipts.
Although it had a respray at some point in its life, the car has never undergone a complete restoration and is in near-original condition.
Estimated price range: $180,000-$220,000
1971 Chrysler Charger RT E38
This car has been with its current owner since 1984, and the Hemi Orange ‘Big Tank Track Pack’ Charger underwent a full restoration in 1998. Its original close-ratio 3-speed gearbox was replaced with a four-speed and the engine replaced with an E38 ‘Six Pack’ with forged pistons, Six Pack conrods, a solid camshaft and lifters, a half-inch head stud kit, stainless steel valves, roller rockers and a modified cylinder head.
The Charger does, however, come with its original three-speed gearbox and E38 engine.
Estimated price range: $160,000-$180,000
