The Goodwood Festival of Speed is the world’s premier classic car and motorsport event…and it includes a hillclimb.
What’s a hillclimb? You might think it involves climbing a hill in a car, and you’d be right. Driver line up in their cars, one by one, and from a standing start attempt to set the fastest time up the hill with a flying finish.
Here we see Jon Barnes run a Caterham 620R up the hill. It gets pretty narrow, but Jon doesn’t hold back! The course is 1.86km long, there’s an elevation change of 92m and the record is 41.6 seconds by F1 driver Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren F1 car. For safety reasons timed F1 runs are no longer permitted, and that’s fine…the Festival of Speed is more about the cars and the drama…as you can see from the video!
Mere mortals are never likely to be able to drive the circuit, but if you own a copy of Gran Turismo 6 then you can drive the course and attempt several time-trial challenges in a variety of cars.
