New 2016 Peugeot 208 launches with two models under $20,000
Peugeot’s new 208 compact car will be here in late October and will be the lowest entry point for the brand in its Australian history.
THE 2016 PEUGEOT 208 is a small city car which has been refreshed with new transmissions and interior gear. There are five models, three engines, two transmissions and two body styles. The range starts with a basic five-speed, 60kW manual and moves up to the GTi at the top end:
- Access manual; $15,990 (60kW drivetrain)
- Access auto; $18,990 (81kW drivetrain)
- Active; $21,990 (automatic transmission only)
- Allure; $25,990 (automatic transmission only)
- GT-Line; $27,490 (automatic transmission only)
- GTi; $30,990
Main image: Access (rear left), GTi (rear right), Active (centre), Allure (front left – options shown) and GT-Line (front right. We have a full review of the 2016 GTi.
All prices are plus on-road costs. The options list is:
- Metallic paint; $990 (all models)
- Premium/textured paints; $1050 (excludes Access)
- Rear camera $300 (Active, Allure, GT-Line and GTi)
- Rear camera with Active City Brake; $500 (Allure & GT-Line)
- Navigation; $1250 (Active)
- Panoramic roof; $1000 (Allure and GT-Line)
- 17-inch alloy wheels; $1000 (Allure)
- Leather with seat heating front; $2000 (Allure)
Very often the metallic paint is an option you almost need to take because it otherwise limits your colour choice, but we don’t know if that’s the case here. The rear camera is good value. “Active City Brake” is a kind of AEB system, explained here. A notable inclusion not listed above is a tyre pressure monitoring system, but cruise control is not standard on Access.
The GT-Line is interesting. Peugeot says: “Appearing for the first time in the Australian 208 line-up is the sports-oriented GT-Line and, at a lowly $27,490 RRP it is sure to be a favorite for drivers wanting the look and feel of Peugeot’s iconic GTi, but without the high-performance drivetrain.”
In others words, show not go. Of course, Peugeot has a very distinguished history with hot hatches, so it is reassuring to see there is a real GTi model for not much more. The specs don’t say, but we assume the suspension and steering is modified to suit a performance car. And it’s manual only, we suspect because Europeans absolutely love their little manuals, especially in hot-hatch form. This writer will not disagree.
All models are 5-doors, except for the GTi which is only 3-door.
